Kay Neufeld is…
a journalist, writer, photographer, and Chatty Kathy.
They were born and raised in New York, where they attended New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and acquired a bachelor’s degree in journalism and gender & sexuality studies.
Their writing has been published in Vox, Salon, The Observer, NYLON Magazine and some of Maine’s biggest newspapers, including the Portland Press Herald, Morning Sentinel, and Sun Journal.
Kay has written about everything from the Kardashians to the Trumps. Literature, music, and fashion. Homelessness, climate change, mental health and mass incarceration.
Kay now works as a reporter for Sun Media Group’s regional newspapers in western Maine photographing and writing about breaking news, local politics, community, business, culture and identity. They have also developed beats in LGBTQ+ issues and homelessness.
At the Franklin Journal, Livermore Falls Advertiser and Sun Journal, Kay has interviewed a U.S. senator, been on the water with lobstermen, delved through municipal and school budgets, covered protests and acted in a haunted house. And they have written investigative work including breaking coverage on chaos in the University of Maine-System and issues around the treatment of LGBTQ+ people in the region.
Kay recently won thirteen awards in the Maine Press Association’s annual contest. The list includes six first place wins in the weekly division categories for News Photo, Political Story, Religion/Spirituality Story, Analysis - Lifestyle Feature, and Analysis.
Kay is most proud of their relationship with the communities they report on. They are committed to not just covering the community, but becoming a community member. Kay is always bringing their notepad and audio recorder with them, even when off the clock and headed to the local bar.
